Women of Black Wall Street
When Mary E. Jones Parrish visited Greenwood in 1918,
she was struck by the
cooperation and harmony she witnessed among residents. She located from Rochester,New York to make her home in the district.
To a host of Black businesses, she added her own: The Mary Jones Parrish School of Natural Education.
On June 1, 1921, a white mob descended upon Greenwood and burned Parrish’s business along with many others and destroyed hundreds of homes. They also killed an untold number of Black citizens.
Women of Black Wall Street tells the story of Greenwood and the Massacre through the lens of its female residents.
